At Home Care

At Home Care

Strong oral health starts with simple daily habits. Use this guide to help prevent cavities, keep gums healthy, improve breath, and protect dental work like crowns, veneers, and implants.

Daily essentials

Brushing (2 times per day)

Brush for two minutes using a soft bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Focus on gentle, small circles along the gumline and cover every tooth surface.

  • Angle bristles toward the gumline and use light pressure (no scrubbing).
  • Brush the inside surfaces and chewing surfaces carefully.
  • Brush your tongue to reduce bacteria and improve breath.
  • Replace brush heads every 3 months (or sooner if frayed).

Flossing (1 time per day)

Flossing removes plaque and food between teeth and under the gumline—areas a toothbrush can’t reach. This daily step is one of the best ways to prevent gum inflammation and bad breath.

  • Gently “hug” the floss around each tooth in a C shape and slide just under the gumline.
  • If gums bleed a little at first, keep going gently—consistency often improves it within 1–2 weeks.
  • For bridges, implants, or orthodontics, specialty floss or a water flosser may help.

Gum health habits

Healthy gums typically do not bleed regularly. If you notice bleeding, swelling, tenderness, or persistent bad breath, it may be a sign of inflammation and needs attention.

Clean the gumline gently

Light pressure is better than hard brushing and helps protect enamel and gums.

Watch for improvement

If bleeding doesn’t improve after 1–2 weeks of daily flossing, request an evaluation.

Sensitivity and enamel protection

Sensitivity may come from enamel wear, gum recession, grinding, or recent dental work. These habits can help reduce discomfort and protect enamel.

Use sensitivity toothpaste

Use daily for 2–4 weeks and brush gently with a soft bristle brush.

Reduce acidic sipping

Frequent soda, sports drinks, energy drinks, and acidic coffee can soften enamel.

Tip: after something acidic, rinse with water and wait about 30 minutes before brushing.

Care tips for crowns, veneers, implants, and aligners

Dental work still needs daily plaque control. Good home care helps your dentistry last longer and keeps your gums healthy.

Crowns and veneers

Brush and floss daily at the edges near the gumline. Avoid chewing ice and hard candy.

Dental implants

Clean around implants daily with floss, interdental brushes, or a water flosser.

Clear aligners

Brush after meals before reinserting aligners. Clean aligners with cool water.

Grinding or clenching

If you wake up with jaw soreness or headaches, ask about a protective night guard.

When to request an appointment

Request an evaluation if you notice pain that lingers, swelling, bleeding gums that do not improve, a broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, or persistent bad breath that does not go away.
